R-22 Freon Phaseout is at Hand
The Environmental Protection Agency has ordered a R-22 freon Phaseout. R-22 is known as a HCFC, or hydrochlorofluorocarbon. One of the ingredients in R-22 is chlorine, which depletes the ozone layer. You can read the EPA official statement HERE.
Air Conditioners with R-22
There are tens of thousands of homes in the United States that still have air conditioning units with R-22. Many of these homes have needed air conditioning repair that required R-22 freon fill. With the phaseout of R-22 freon, prices of this product are sky rocketing. Very soon it will be near impossible to purchase this refrigerant at local AC supply houses. Just about every customer that needs a freon fill is shocked at the contractor’s price for the repair.
Solutions to the R-22 Freon Phaseout
There are a few solutions to the EPA mandated phaseout of R-22. The first option is to upgrade your air conditioning system to one that has an environmentally friendly refrigerant such as R-410a. These systems have proven to be more energy efficient and less expensive to repair if you need a freon fill. The homeowner will have to pay a lot more because the entire cooling system must match to operate properly. The good news is that homeowners will save money on their utility bill. Manufacturers are offering incentives to purchase newer systems by giving tax credits and 10 year warranties on their parts.
The second option is to try to repair the leak and refill with freon. This is a less expensive repair upfront and should keep the homeowner cool for the time being. The downfall to this is that it is inevitable that the system will need to be replaced in the near future.
